TUOL PRAH THAT INSCRIPTION

DATED 592

Tuol Prah That is in the province of Prei Veng.

The inscription is written in Sanskrit and consists 11 verses in Arya metre.

It records the installation of a Siva linga in the year 595 by an official of King Jayavarman I, who was the president of the Royal Assembly and received various honours from the king.

शरनवशराङ्किताब्दे वृषेन्द्रलग्ने पुनर्वसुयुतेन्दौ।

चैत्रसितपक्षनवमे स्थापितमत्रैश्वरं लिङ्गम्॥१॥

Sivalinga was installed here in Saka year 595 on the ninth day of Sukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra in Vrishabha lagna when moon was in the constellation Punarvasu.

जयति जगदेकहेतुः नतजननिश्श्रेयसाभ्युदयाकारी।

कामञ्जगत्सुचरितच्छेदनमिति यस्स निर्दहति॥२॥

Victory to Siva, the sole cause of the world, the bestower of physical and spiritual progress and the destroyer of Manmatha, who tends to spoil the good conduct of people.

यस्य जितचक्रभृतो जितशत्रुगणस्य विक्रमेण जिता।

अपि सागरपर्यन्ता करावबद्धा हरेरिव भूः॥३॥

This land, bounded by ocean, is ruled entirely by the sovereign, who conquered his hordes of enemies by his prowess, like Hari.

राजा श्रीजयवर्मा श्रीपतिरिव सर्वदा श्रिया जुष्टः।

रणशरजयिनां राज्ञां स माननीयः पुरोयातः॥४॥

King Sri Jayavarman, who is ever surrounded by riches, is honoured by the kings defeated by him on the battle-field; he walks ahead of them.

सबलैरपि नृपसिंहैर्दुर्लङ्घितशासनस्य तस्यैव।

भृत्यः स्वाम्यनुरक्तः त्यागी शूरो विजितशत्रुः॥५॥

His rule could not be overrun even by strong kings. He had an assistant, much attached to his master, given to sacrifice and valour and who had conquered enemies.

स्वस्वामिनः प्रसादात् स च राजसभाधिपत्यकृतनामा।

सौवर्णकलशकरङ्कसितातपत्रादिसन्मानः॥६॥

Due to the grace of his master, he was appointed the head of the royal assembly and honoured with golden pot and vessel, white umbrella etc.

तेनैकान्तिकभक्त्या शम्भोः स्वायम्भुवं महालिङ्गम्।

श्रीकेदारेश्वर इति नाम्ना संस्थापितं विधिना॥७।

By him, who possessed great devotion, was installed as per procedures the great Svayambhu (originated on its own) Sivalinga, named Sri Kedareswara.

हैमं कोशं मकुटं कलशकरङ्कं तथा च रूप्यमयम्।

क्षेत्रारामा बहवो गोमहिषा दासवर्गाश्च॥८॥

Golden box, crown, pots and vessels and silver vessels, lands, gardens, many cows, buffaloes and slaves…..

विविधो द्रव्यविशेषः श्रद्धादत्तो धिया कुराजेन।

श्रीकेदारेश्वरस्य पूजार्थं तेन भक्तिमता॥९॥

And other wealth was donated with faith by that devoted king for worship of Sri Kedareswara.

दत्तमिदमुत्तरोदयनामाभ्यां तत्स्वभागिनेयाभ्याम्।

स पुरं पूजास्थितये तेन च तस्यैव देवेश्वरस्य॥१०॥

This city is given by him to his nephews (sister’s sons) called Uttarodayas for the purpose of worship of the Sivalinga established here.

श्रीकेदारेशधनं यत् किञ्चित् कश्चिदाहृत्य सरति।

एकविंशतिनरकान्तं खानलतापितो व्रजतु॥११॥

May whoever steals any property of Sri Kedareswara proceed to the miserable twentyone narakas and be roasted in intense heat.
